SEO-first Wix to WordPress migration for Cute Story Events

Scope

Thinking of rebuilding your website with accessibility built in from the start? Let’s chat →

Cute Story Events came to me with an established Wix website, a distinctive visual identity, and a growing event planning business, but the website wasn’t contributing meaningfully to lead generation. Most inquiries were still coming through Instagram, and the existing site didn’t have the technical or SEO foundation needed to become a stronger discovery channel.

What initially looked like a website migration quickly became a much broader SEO-first rebuild from Wix to WordPress. The goal was to preserve the personality and community-focused identity of Cute Story Events while rebuilding the website around stronger site architecture, search visibility, accessibility, performance, and long-term manageability.

I led the migration and redevelopment of 29 existing pages, including 7 core pages, 14 blog posts, and 8 tag pages, while rebuilding the blog ecosystem and implementing on-page and technical SEO throughout the site. The work also included URL and redirect planning, metadata, heading structure, internal linking, image optimization, mobile responsiveness, accessibility-focused design refinements, analytics integrations, forms, schema, and extensive pre- and post-launch QA.

Another problem area was that the previous color palette did not pass accessibility standards. So I worked with Marketing by Rocio’s brand designer, Olivia Daniels, on accessibility improvements, implementing custom typography, and refining high-contrast color combinations.

After the website launched, I managed redirect and indexing QA, Search Console monitoring, schema validation, performance testing, and technical troubleshooting after launch. I then delivered a comprehensive maintenance guide and WordPress tutorial so the client could confidently manage pages, publish new stories, maintain plugins and backups, and handle basic SEO updates independently.

Before working with Marketing by Rocio, Cute Story Event’s color palette was not accessible because the text and background colors lacked the necessary contrast for readability.

Solution

My approach centered on treating the migration as an opportunity to rebuild the website’s foundation rather than simply recreating the Wix site in WordPress. Cute Story Events already had an established brand and existing content, so the priority was to preserve what was working visually while creating a more accessible, search-friendly, and manageable website behind it.

The project moved through five interconnected phases: technical setup and planning, WordPress development and accessibility, content and SEO migration, pre-launch QA and launch, and post-launch stabilization and handover. This expanded on the original migration plan as technical and usability needs emerged during development.

Phase 1: Technical setup & migration planning

  • Audited the existing Wix website and created an inventory of the 29 pages, posts, and taxonomy pages that needed to be migrated
  • Set up the new WordPress environment and Hostinger hosting while the existing Wix website remained live
  • Established the security, backup, performance, and SEO foundations needed for the new site
  • Reviewed the existing URL structure and planned redirects to preserve search equity during the platform change
  • Connected the migration strategy with existing Google Analytics, Google Search Console, domain, and Google Business Profile accounts
  • Coordinated accessibility-focused brand refinements so the new website could retain the original visual identity with stronger color contrast and usability

Phase 2: WordPress development & accessible design

  • Rebuilt the core website pages in WordPress, recreating the existing visual language while improving layout structure and responsiveness
  • Implemented the refined accessible color palette throughout the website
  • Recreated major homepage sections, imagery, typography, CTAs, navigation, footer elements, and video content
  • Used custom CSS where necessary to solve limitations around typography, archive layouts, hover states, responsive behavior, and other design details
  • Built and tested layouts across desktop, tablet, and mobile rather than relying solely on the original Wix presentation
  • Optimized website imagery and media for accessibility and performance with descriptive alt text, SEO-friendly filenames, and web-friendly formats

Phase 3: Content migration, blog architecture & on-page SEO

  • Migrated and reformatted the existing blog content rather than simply importing it without review
  • Built the Cute Stories blog archive and individual post system around a cleaner WordPress content structure
  • Reviewed and refined categories and tags to create a more useful taxonomy for both visitors and search engines
  • Optimized metadata, heading hierarchy, excerpts, featured images, internal links, image alt text, and filenames across the migrated site
  • Reviewed URLs and implemented redirect planning for pages whose structure changed during migration
  • Configured supporting functionality including contact forms, newsletter signup, analytics, search tools, and foundational schema

Phase 4: Pre-launch QA, migration & launch

  • Conducted a full-site QA pass across core pages, blog posts, taxonomy pages, archives, search results, and the 404 experience
  • Verified metadata, H1 usage, excerpts, featured images, optimized imagery, navigation, buttons, forms, internal links, and responsive behavior
  • Tested newsletter and contact functionality and troubleshot email delivery and SMTP configuration
  • Reviewed accessibility, page speed, caching, plugin configuration, backups, security, and technical WordPress issues before migration
  • Finalized redirect mapping and prepared the domain/DNS transition from the Wix site to the new WordPress installation
  • Submitted the new sitemap and prepared Google Search Console for the change in site structure

Phase 5: Post-launch QA, SEO monitoring & client handover

  • Monitored Google Search Console after launch to track indexing, sitemap processing, redirects, canonicalization, and Google’s adoption of the new WordPress structure
  • Identified and corrected migration-specific redirect issues while allowing time for Google to process the updated URLs and preferred domain configuration
  • Tested PageSpeed, Core Web Vitals, structured data, forms, redirects, accessibility, and hosting resources under the live environment
  • Validated the site’s foundational schema and reviewed non-critical technical warnings separately from issues that could affect users or indexing
  • Delivered a live WordPress tutorial covering content editing, blog publishing, SEO settings, plugins, caching, backups, security, Analytics, and Search Console
  • Created a comprehensive written handover and maintenance guide so the client could confidently manage routine website updates without ongoing developer support

The result was a migration that went significantly beyond transferring content between platforms. Cute Story Events came out of the project with a fully rebuilt WordPress website, a stronger technical and SEO foundation, an accessible design system, a structured blog ecosystem, and the documentation and training needed to manage the site independently after launch.

Before migration (February 7–May 29, 2026)

Before the migration, the site generated 312 search impressions and 45 organic clicks, with a 14.4% click-through rate and an average Google position of 9.5. Search visibility remained relatively limited, with the site appearing for a smaller pool of queries despite strong engagement when it did appear.

Google Search Console performance for Cute Story Events after migration, showing 58 clicks, 1.43K impressions, 4% CTR, and 37.8 average position.
After migration: Search impressions jumped from 312 to 1.43K — a 358% increase — while organic clicks grew 29%, significantly expanding the website’s visibility across Google Search.

After migration (June 7–September 29, 2026)

Following the migration, the site’s organic search footprint expanded significantly. Google Search Console recorded 1,430 impressions and 58 organic clicks, representing a 358% increase in search impressions and a 29% increase in clicks compared with the pre-migration period.

As the site began appearing for a much broader range of searches, average position shifted from 9.5 to 37.8 and CTR from 14.4% to 4%. Rather than indicating stronger individual rankings, the data shows a substantial expansion in overall search visibility, with the migrated site being surfaced across considerably more queries.

  • After migration: 58 clicks · 1.43K impressions

Key outcome

After migration, organic search impressions increased 358% and clicks increased 29%, significantly expanding the website’s visibility in Google Search.
