Thinking of building a website that brings brand, audience, and strategy together? Let’s chat →
Backcourt Collective came to me as a growing women’s basketball community with an established presence in Portland, but without a digital home that fully reflected where the organization was headed. As its community, partnerships, and ambitions expanded, the brand needed clearer positioning and a website that could bring its different audiences and initiatives together in one place.
The scope focused on building that foundation — including brand and marketing strategy, website messaging and architecture, and a new WordPress website. The goal was to give Backcourt a clear digital presence for both community members and potential partners, while building enough flexibility into the site to support new programs, memberships, and resources as the organization grows.
My approach focused on giving Backcourt Collective a digital foundation that could support what the organization needed at launch without trying to build every part of its long-term vision at once. With ideas around community programming, Sub-Collectives, memberships, partnerships, and future resources all developing at the same time, the first priority was creating clarity around the brand, its audiences, and what the website actually needed to accomplish.
That strategy carried through the entire project. Rather than treating branding, website structure, copy, and development as separate deliverables, each phase informed the next: the brand strategy shaped the messaging, the messaging shaped the sitemap, and the sitemap became the blueprint for the WordPress build.

The final site gave Backcourt Collective a clear digital home for both sides of its work: building community around women’s basketball and developing relationships with organizations that want to support or collaborate with that community. Just as importantly, the website was built around what Backcourt could realistically manage at launch, while leaving a flexible foundation for its membership, content, and community infrastructure to expand over time.

Sandra Yokley 🔗Founder of Backcourt Collective“I worked with Rocio on website development, web copywriting, and brand messaging. Even though Rocio had no prior experience working with a women’s sports business, they were able to translate their expertise to meet my exact needs. Working with Rocio positioned our business well for launch, and we feel confident in our ability, after working with Rocio, to adjust our strategies as needed given the resources they left us with.” |
