Brand strategy, copywriting & WordPress development for a BIPOC community platform

Scope

Been thinking of getting a new visual brand identity? Let’s chat →

Black and Worldly came to me with an ambitious idea: create a digital space where BIPOC communities could find practical resources while also discovering the stories, work, and perspectives of BIPOC artists and creatives. The concept had grown out of founder Adobuere’s own experiences navigating difficult-to-access support systems and her background in performance and storytelling. What was missing was the brand and digital infrastructure that could bring those ideas together in one cohesive platform.

At the time, Black and Worldly was primarily using Substack for written and multimedia content, but Adobuere wanted to consolidate the project rather than continue building across disconnected platforms. We identified an owned website as the foundation: a central home for Black and Worldly’s existing stories, future resource platform, email audience, and long-term search visibility.

Before designing anything, we needed to clarify exactly what Black and Worldly was, who it served, and how its two seemingly different functions fit together. Through strategy work, audience development, and brand messaging, we established a positioning that connected survival resources with cultural storytelling: practical support for BIPOC people looking for housing, food, healthcare, gender-affirming care, employment, and community resources, alongside a storytelling platform centering BIPOC artists and creatives.

From there, I led the project from brand foundation through launch: developing the messaging and website copy, translating an existing visual identity into a complete responsive WordPress site, migrating and structuring content, building the resource system, implementing on-page and technical SEO, connecting analytics and email infrastructure, and creating the systems Adobuere would need to manage the platform independently after handover.

Core deliverables and scope

  • Designed and developed a responsive WordPress website, including the homepage, About, Stories, Resources, Contact, Links, and supporting pages

Solution

My approach was to treat Black and Worldly as a complete digital ecosystem rather than simply a website build. The platform needed to accommodate two very different user needs: someone looking for an immediate community resource and someone arriving to read an artist interview, without making either side of the project feel secondary or disconnected.

The Brand Voice Guide by Marketing by Rocio allows clients to have a point of reference for copywriting, grant writing, and pitching. This guide gives the confidence to speak about clients’ own brands with accuracy and cohesiveness.

That meant the work had to happen in stages. We first established the brand strategy and messaging so that every later decision had a clear foundation. From there, I translated that strategy into the website’s architecture, copy, visual experience, content systems, and SEO structure. The final phase focused on infrastructure, QA, and documentation so the platform could continue growing after handover.

Phase 1: Brand strategy & messaging

  • Defined Black and Worldly’s mission, vision, positioning, core values, USP, key phrases, and brand voice within a comprehensive messaging framework
  • Developed distinct audience profiles for resource seekers and BIPOC artists, creatives, and cultural audiences
  • Clarified how the resource platform and storytelling content could coexist under one brand, positioning Black and Worldly around the intersection of community support, creativity, and cultural visibility
  • Established brand voice guidelines centered on clear, accessible, community-focused communication rather than corporate or overly polished language
  • Developed messaging around the founder’s story and the lived experiences that shaped the concept behind Black and Worldly
  • Used the completed brand strategy as the foundation for the website architecture and copy

Phase 2: Website strategy, copy & WordPress development

  • Planned the website architecture around Stories, Resources, About, Contact, Links, and supporting pages, creating clear pathways for the platform’s different audiences
  • Wrote and structured website copy using the newly established messaging and brand voice
  • Designed and developed the full website in WordPress, translating the visual identity into reusable, responsive page layouts
  • Built a scalable Stories publishing system for interviews, essays, artist features, images, and embedded video
  • Developed the structure for the resource platform, including categorized BIPOC-centered resources designed to eventually support filtering by resource type and location
  • Migrated existing stories and content into the new website so Black and Worldly could begin building an owned content archive
  • Iterated on layouts, imagery, buttons, navigation, footer elements, and content presentation based on client feedback
  • Optimized layouts across desktop, tablet, and mobile to ensure the site remained functional and visually consistent across screen sizes

Phase 3: SEO, infrastructure & technical QA

  • Implemented SEO metadata, image alt text, schema, image optimization, and page-level search optimization across core pages and Stories
  • Reviewed the full website for broken links, missing content, publishing inconsistencies, and technical issues
  • Created and reviewed HTML and XML sitemap infrastructure and submitted the sitemap through Google Search Console
  • Connected Google Analytics and Google Search Console to establish performance and search visibility tracking from launch
  • Set up Black and Worldly’s branded business email through Hostinger and connected the site’s contact infrastructure
  • Integrated email marketing infrastructure to support future newsletter and audience-building efforts
  • Configured website security, backups, two-factor authentication, caching, and plugin maintenance systems
  • Completed final responsive and technical QA before handover, troubleshooting issues across the WordPress backend and live site

Phase 4: Client training & website handover

  • Led a live website tutorial covering WordPress access, page editing, Story publishing, resource management, backups, plugin updates, and cache management
  • Walked the client through Google Analytics and Google Search Console so they could understand how visitors discover and use the website
  • Set up multiple secure access methods and reviewed two-factor authentication for both WordPress and Hostinger
  • Demonstrated how to create backups with UpdraftPlus and safely update the site without risking existing content
  • Established repeatable workflows for publishing future Stories, including featured images, excerpts, URLs, video embeds, and other content elements
  • Created an 18-page website handover and maintenance guide documenting the site’s core workflows, security practices, maintenance processes, and troubleshooting steps
  • Structured the final system so routine publishing and website updates could be handled independently without ongoing developer involvement

By structuring the project in this way, Black and Worldly moved from a concept and collection of content spread across external platforms to a cohesive, independently owned digital ecosystem. The finished project established the brand messaging, website, content systems, search infrastructure, analytics, email setup, security, and maintenance workflows needed to support both its storytelling platform and the continued development of its BIPOC resource hub.
