SEO blog copywriting for LGBTQ+ dating app

Scope

As an SEO project manager at Marketing by Rocio, I juggle multiple roles. Keeping my skills as an SEO copywriter up to date is essential, even when time is limited due to project management, business administration, and other marketing activities. From January 2023 to December 2024, I wrote for the HER queer dating app, which allowed me to actively exercise my copywriting skills, bringing this expertise to all my clients.Visit 🌐 my author page on the HER blog 🌐 to read my work.Every SEO-optimized article written for the HER blog must resonate with HER’s diverse and vibrant audience, primarily comprising queer women, nonbinary individuals, trans, and gender non-conforming people. These individuals seek content that is informative, empowering, reflective of their experiences, and supportive of their journeys. My goal is to ensure this comes across in all the content I write.

HER sought SEO-optimized, high-quality blog content that felt personal and relevant to its community. I was tasked with generating multiple posts per week — all while staying aligned with HER’s voice, values, and search engine goals. Topics ranged from queer fashion to ADHD-friendly dating advice.

Platforms and tools used

  • Google Docs: Drafted all blog posts in Google Docs to enable collaborative editing and feedback. This made handoffs with the editorial team seamless and efficient during the review process.
  • Keysearch.co: Used Keysearch to supplement briefs with keyword research and competitor insights. This ensured each article was optimized for maximum search visibility and topical relevance.
  • Notion: Managed the content calendar and assignment pipeline using Notion. This helped maintain an organized production schedule while tracking deadlines, edits, and approvals.
  • Slack: Facilitated cross-functional communication via Slack, mainly for project updates, scheduling logistics, and internal alignment unrelated to content itself.

The result: A sustainable, repeatable content workflow that allowed me to publish between 2–5 SEO-optimized blog posts per week—without compromising on quality, brand voice, or organic reach.

Solution

For 12 months in 2023, and for a few months in late 2024, I worked as a contributing writer and SEO strategist. Each week, I researched and delivered 2–5 blog posts, applying keyword strategy, competitor research, and editorial structure to improve both ranking and readability.

When writing, I focused on:

  • Human-first SEO: Keyword-optimized articles without sacrificing nuance, depth, or authenticity
  • Consistent voice: Staying true to HER’s tone — affirming, clever, community-driven
  • Efficiency: Hitting tight turnarounds while maintaining high editorial quality
  • Topical relevance: Writing on subjects like queer fashion, ADHD, travel, and identity with insight and care

Across the 40 articles I wrote, my topics of expertise included:

  • Queer living in NYC, Paris, & Amsterdam
  • Queer fashion and style
  • Living with ADHD
  • Nonbinary dating tips
  • LGBTQ+ travel & Pride city guides

Measurable impact

Several of the articles I wrote for HER’s blog performed above average in terms of user engagement and traffic. Here are some standout metrics:

  • Bisexual Panic received 3,550+ views and reached over 3,190 users
  • Lesbian Shoe Style attracted 320+ visits, with 282 unique users
  • Sapphic Thumb Rings had an average engagement time of 1 minute 18 seconds, surpassing platform averages
  • Dating with ADHD saw one of the highest engagement times at 1 min 42 seconds
  • Lesbian Undercut sustained over 1 minute of avg. active user time, indicating strong retention
  • Most posts received over 1.1 page views per user, with repeat engagement across topics

These metrics showcase how thoughtful, SEO-informed content can drive traffic, sustain user interest, and reflect a brand’s voice — especially for a niche, underserved audience.
