Comprehensive SEO partnership for Expansive Therapy

Scope

Expansive Therapy is a New York-based collective of LGBTQ+ and BIPOC-affirming therapists. In Fall 2024, they approached me to conduct a professional SEO audit after noticing that their online visibility and engagement metrics weren’t reflecting the consistency or quality of their blogging efforts. The site was built in Framer, and while the design was strong, its SEO setup had critical gaps—including missing metadata, improper heading hierarchy, and an incomplete sitemap.Between Fall 2024 and Spring 2025, my team and I partnered with the Expansive team to overhaul their SEO infrastructure and create sustainable systems that supported long-term growth and editorial clarity.

The scope of work included:

  • A comprehensive technical SEO audit, covering indexing, metadata, sitemap structure, and crawlability
  • Full Google Search Console and Google Analytics setup, including walkthroughs and dashboards for internal use
  • Keyword research and retroactive optimization of high-traffic blog content that lacked alignment with search intent
  • Creation of an internal SEO writing guide, tailored to the team’s trauma-informed, therapeutic voice
  • Ongoing monthly maintenance into 2025, including metadata refinement, performance reviews, and blog strategy consulting

To structure the engagement, the work was broken into three key phases: an SEO audit, retroactive SEO, and ongoing SEO maintenance.

SEO audit (Fall 2024)

A full technical audit revealed systemic issues impacting site performance, including unindexed therapist pages, excessive H1 tags, missing meta descriptions, sitemap inefficiencies, and mobile responsiveness gaps. My team and I also evaluated bounce rate patterns and outlined a prioritized action plan.

Retroactive SEO (Q1 2025)

Using the audit insights, I selected three high-priority blog posts for in-depth optimization. My work included rewriting titles and descriptions, restructuring headings, compressing images, writing alt text, and strengthening internal linking—all while preserving the authors’ clinical tone and maintaining therapeutic integrity.

Ongoing maintenance (2025–present)

To support long-term SEO health, I implemented monthly metadata reviews, seasonal GSC performance checks, and provided the client with tailored documentation. I also created an internal SEO style guide that merged best practices with the brand’s affirming, trauma-informed approach.

Tools used

  • Google Search Console – Indexing, performance tracking, sitemap submission
  • Google Analytics – User engagement analysis, traffic attribution
  • Screaming Frog – Full-site crawl and metadata structure auditing
  • Keysearch.co – Competitor research and keyword opportunity mapping
  • Framer – CMS limitations and structural recommendations
  • Google Drive – Shared workspaces for edits, documentation, and delivery
  • Email – For async project check-ins, approvals, and stakeholder coordination
The Expansive Therapy website includes over 40 therapist bios—each on a unique indexed page. Optimizing this section for crawlability significantly improved site visibility and discoverability.
One of the most impactful technical fixes was correcting the indexing status of Expansive Therapy’s individual therapist pages. Despite having a robust directory of over 40 bios, none of these pages were being indexed by Google due to a default noindex setting in Framer’s CMS template. Within weeks, the bios were indexed and began surfacing in relevant search results—improving both domain authority and organic visibility for long-tail therapist-related queries.

Solution

My approach balanced rigorous technical implementation with sensitivity to Expansive Therapy’s clinical identity and trauma-informed brand voice. Here’s how:

Phase 1: SEO audit (Fall 2024)

With the help of Andrea, my SEO collaborator, we ran a full site crawl to diagnose performance and indexing issues.

  • Set up Google Search Console and submitted a custom XML sitemap
  • Identified critical technical issues, including:
    • Multiple H1 tags across 80+ pages
    • Missing canonical tags
    • Unindexed therapist bio pages
    • Lack of Terms of Service and Privacy Policy pages
    • Blog authorship disconnect impacting E-E-A-T
  • Delivered a written and visual debrief, with recommendations categorized by urgency and impact

Phase 2: Retroactive blog optimization (Q1 2025)

The Expansive team and I selected 3 blogs based on search potential, branding value, and existing traffic:

Each post was fully optimized while preserving the clinical tone and intent. Work included:

  • Rewriting H1s, meta titles, descriptions, and internal links
  • Creating keyword-aligned, accessible image alt text
  • Compressing images and improving on-page structure for readability and mobile performance

Phase 3: SEO maintenance & strategy (2025–ongoing)

  • Developed and delivered a custom SEO style guide tailored to Expansive Therapy’s audience and writing team
  • Provided monthly technical check-ins and quarterly analytics reports
  • Introduced an author attribution system to strengthen E-E-A-T signals
  • Reviewed analytics to guide future blog strategy (including click-through rates, conversion paths, and underperforming content)
